COMPANY PROFILE__________________
The Scientific Instrument Co. Ltd. was setup by Late B.M. Mukherjee, an eminent scientist of I.I.T. Roorkee, in the year 1911, with the objective of providing electrical components and glass blown apparatus for science laboratories in the education sector. It established very good reputation among the customer country wide popularizing as “SICO”.
Considering a rare entrepreneurial feat those days, he laid the foundation in the early twentieth century, and led from the front seeing an opportunity in the emerging education market, opening up for private enterprise with strong technological background, conviction and risk taking abilities. Besides scientific laboratory equipment, Mr Mukherjee pioneered manufacture of Resistance and Post office boxes, ovens and incubators. Research and development activities are considered as an essential component of advanced studies of science, engineering and technical education because of their role in creating new knowledge and insight, and imparting excitement and dynamism to the education process as well as make them need based in view of the national requirement. SICO continues to keep-up the spirit and the focus till date.
New opportunities opened up for similar items in the mid 1930s, for import trade in products for newly established sugar factories, science, engineering and medical colleges and so on, being related field of expertise for SICO. Trading became a major part of SICO’s turnover as opportunities opened up in wider areas, particularly in electronic test and measuring, microscopy, biotechnology and geological equipments for education and research, and the new focus for Defence needs. These three sectors formed the core areas of competence ever since, and continue even today. SICO steadfastly adhered to its core competence, which propelled growth and consolidation, under the stewardship of Mr. B.N.Sinha, the present managing director.
Import substitution was the basic theme of SICO in 1911 when it commenced its business in Allahabad, and also was the prime “Mantra” throughout its manufacturing activity, which was renewed with greater emphasis in the 1960s, when NATIONAL PHYSICAL LABORATORY (NPL) in Delhi identified SICO as its franchisee in the country.
NPL offered the technical know-how it developed for Microwave Test Benches to SICO for the educational sector in India with its comprehensive support and technology. SICO expanded its range of microwave products in such highly specialized field in the frequency range from 2.65 GHz to 110 Ghz covering Ku, Ka, L, S, J, C and X bands alongwith power supplies and instruments for measurement. NPL trained SICO Engineers into specialists extending all facilities, for testing and certification, and collaborative environment continues even to this day.
Interacting closely with academicians and defence laboratories, SICO further observed the planner technology of microwave field as the demand of time today and it may gradually replace conventional waveguide passive components and benches. It approached Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi for design and development of Microwave Integrated Circuit (MIC) components and have obtained technical know-how for manufacture of “Advanced Microstrip (MIC) Trainer Kit(AMTK)” and “X-Band Microstrip Antenna Trainer Kit(ATK)”. AMTK was launched one and half year ago and as usual, SICO has received good number of orders from IITs, NITs, Engineering Colleges, Science PG Colleges, Polytechnics and Universities. ATK will be launched by October, 2007.
Through our sustained research and development efforts, we have also developed and produced very sophisticated microwave components like Hybrids, Power Dividers, Couplers, Bends, Twists, Filters, Phase Shifters, Limiters, Antennas, Amplifiers for Defence, Space, Communication, Education and Research. We have supplied these components to organizations such as DRDO, BEL, DEAL, HAL, ISRO, IPR, MES, Indian Navy, CAT and DOT.
